'We've never seen this': wildlife thrives in closed US national parks

"Earlier this month, for the first time in recent memory, pronghorn antelope ventured into the sun-scorched lowlands of Death Valley national park. Undeterred by temperatures that climbed to over 110F, the animals were observed by park staff browsing on a hillside not far from Furnace Creek visitor center."

"'This is something we haven’t seen in our lifetimes', said Kati Schmidt, a spokesperson for the National Parks Conservation Association. 'We’ve known they’re in some of the higher elevation areas of Death Valley but as far as we’re aware they’ve never been documented this low in the park, near park headquarters'."

"The return of pronghorns to Death Valley is but one of many stories of wildlife thriving on public lands since the coronavirus closures went into effect a month and a half ago."

"In Yosemite national park, closed since 20 March, wildlife have flocked in large numbers to a virtually abandoned Yosemite Valley."

Hare ball (2020 BigPicture Natural World Photography Contest)
by Andy Parkinson

"To get this intimate shot of a mountain hare (Lepus timidus) curled up against a Scottish winter storm, Andy Parkinson endured weeks of ferocious cold and wind that drove shards of ice into his face. Britain’s only native rabbit species, on the other hand, is utterly at home in these inhospitable conditions. Groups of twenty or more hares gather each winter to nibble heather on leeward slopes, where the snow tends to be shallower. Before resting, they jump away from their tracks to confuse predators. And while some ride out storms in burrows or depressions, this female created her own shelter, tucking herself into a ball to conserve heat and minimize exposure to the elements. It’s a nifty strategy for surviving the kind of weather that drives most creatures indoors or underground.

Despite their fortitude, mountain hares are Britain’s fastest-declining mammal, due to unregulated hunting and habitat loss. Parkinson hopes that calling attention to these remarkable rabbits will convince legislators to protect them."

That´s not very much, but it was exactly how much little 🐰Alba❤ weighed arriving at @saijaszoo yesterday evening.
This little brown hare was found with a dead sibling aside him/her. The other baby had already been pecked to death - by gulls, magpies and / or crows - but this one is now safe with Saija, looked after and being fed around the clock every 3 hours.
I met Alba earlier this afternoon, and in these pics the little one is assumed to be less than 48 hrs "old".
It is much too soon to make any predictions, but if nothing new and tragic turns up there is at least some reason for cautios optimism.
Then again, only time will tell..
Just so you know, the Finnish government today declared a national emergency because of this damn #coronavirus and we are pretty much going into a lockdown, with several tight restrictions taking place starting tomorrow. This obviously means, that updating this post jusr might get a bit "tricky" along the way... but I promise to try my best. (Also, both Saija and I are just fine at the moment btw)
