Bypassing clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine 'catastrophic,' says editorial

http://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202005/23/WS5ec88c5ca310a8b241157ca4.html

Bypassing clinical trials of a potential vaccine for #SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing #COVID-19, would be "catastrophic," said an editorial published on #Science Advances on Friday.

It is "vital to take time" to ensure any vaccine candidate's safety and investigate potential adverse effects, said the editorial by Douglas Green, deputy editor of the multidisciplinary scientific journal.

A vaccine able to trigger strong neutralizing antibody responses in #clinical tests will still not be ready for widespread implementation without comprehensive safety tests, wrote Green, who is also an expert on #immunology.

Vaccines must be examined for causing an effect known as antibody-dependent enhancement, whereby #vaccine-induced #antibodies that bind to the #virus also attach to the body's #cells, facilitating #infection of these cells -- a concerning phenomenon that has been observed in vaccines against #dengue, #Ebola, #HIV, and #feline #coronavirus, said the editorial.

Ethical accelerated testing on humans "should not be ruled out completely," but extreme risks must be weighed against potential benefits, it said.

There are currently 95 vaccines under development against SARS-CoV-2, with most expected to clear phase one, and two already moving into phase two trials, it added.

I don't know, I'm not sure it has just yet. The tabloids and the right wind press of Murdoch and Co will find ways to blame the failures on others and explain some of it away with "different circumstances" (I've already seen some excuses using population density, which they can then also nicely link to those ghastly immigrants). Then there's all the patriotic VE Day stuff coming up, where I've seen plenty support with "let's celebrate VE Day social distancing style in our front gardens" already. Unless Starmer really hits the ground running and can really do some damage to the Tories I fear there's still quite some steam left in Johnson and his crew.

I thought the Times/Sunday Times was a Johnson supporting paper and would be singing his praises and how he was a leader and took one for the team?

I can't help wondering how many of these people will be in hospital in 2-3 weeks. Or dead. While blaming the "libtards".

Yes, it's not only the young breaking the rules/guidance, the older generation is just as bad.

Provost urges elderly to abide by the lockdown rules

I wouldn't be surprised if some when challenged bring up some war stories/arguments ("We survived the Blitz and won't let this virus get us down") as if you can just overcome a virus with some grit and determination. Also ignoring that plenty of people didn't survive the Blitz.

Remember hearing an interview with a few pensioners just before the full lockdown was announced and not going to the pub was just a recommendation. They just said, oh no, we'll still go to the pub/cafe, can't stop us in our way of life. Freedom!

Some interesting points about the flaws and problems with contact tracing apps. I can relate.

I live in a second floor flat and can see many of the flaws mentioned happening here: When pairing Bluetooth I regularly see stuff I don't know who owns it, could easily be one of the flats either side of me or the flat below me (I'm the top floor, so there can't be anything from above). Should they decide to just use location (nothing is impossible with the imbeciles in our government...) I would be in exactly the same place as the guy living below me and the folks on the ground floor. I think over the last couple of months I've met the guy living below me twice in the staircase, the people from the ground floor I think I've only met once.

When I go out for my daily exercise walk most of the people I meet are regulars with the few odd ones out thrown in. So I won't know which one of them triggered the alarm, so I can't think about the meetings I've had. Most are very good in keeping their distances (in particular the regulars), although some are closer than I would like. A few days ago I had a 5 minute chat with one of the regulars. He is one of the best in keeping distance, he almost jumps into the canal while I'm hugging the fence on the other side of the towpath. While we were chatting (after we had passed each other) I estimate we were more like 4 metres apart, if not even 5 metres. No distance for Bluetooth. But I suspect the app would trigger an alert.

Considering all the crap and fake Coronavirus news I've seen being shared in particular on Facebook I wouldn't be surprised if the Russians and other actors would jump at the opportunity, Not to mention all the pranksters. I predict they will get very creative, very imaginative. They will come up with all kind of schemes to create alerts and panic, schemes not even the security professionals have thought of yet.

I'm not optimistic for a contact tracing app.

Kind of a bookmark for the next time I see some privileged middle class person from the comfort of their spacious home with a nice garden complaining about the people who dare to leave their homes to go to a park, saying, "just stay home, it's that simple".

Oh dear, that article didn't age well, not at all. Similar to quite a few of his Brexit articles (eg claiming that the UK wouldn't leave the single market).

Daniel Hannan: Alarmism, doom-mongering, panic – and the coronavirus. We are nowhere near a 1919-style catastrophe.

As of writing this we are at over 4,000 deaths. Considering the current growth rate of deaths I expect we're going to hit the 10,000 mark in about a week (ie around 12/Apr) and there's a good chance we're going to hit 15,000 around Easter.

And that's despite the (belated) measures the government has taken (which are still being ignored by a sizeable minority). If they hadn't taken those measures I expect the numbers would have been a multiple of the current numbers. In just a few weeks. Not the whole winter season the deniers so often like to use to compare the Coronavirus to the Flu deaths we have every winter.

PS: in one of his later articles, as you would expect, he's arguing we need to lift the restrictions by Easter.

However, things changed in April 2019 when FireEye security researcher Nick Carr found two archives uploaded on the VirusTotal malware scanning portal that contained Carbanak's source code.
Wow, what a finding
