Last Fall and Winter we did an experiment for fun to re-grow different food plants from the cut off pieces that we would normally just compost. Here are some of the results.

Cashew-waste possible bio-degradable sunscreen in our future

With current concerns over the use of fossil resourcesfor chemical synthesis of functional molecules and the effect ofcurrent UV absorbers in sunscreens have on the ecosystem, wedescribe a xylochemical synthesis of different classes of aro-matic UV absorbers utilizing cashew nut shell liquid as a non-edible bio-renewable carbon source. Hydroxybenzophenones,xanthones, triazines, and flavones were synthesized startingfrom cardanol or anacardic acid. Several compounds exhibitedfavorable UVA and UVB absorption characteristics.
