Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #hardware, #linux, #linux-fedora, #privacy, #software, and #technology.

I'm not quite sure what to think of this platform, anyone got some tips to start?

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #independantnews, #music, #reading, #rvliving, #science, and #writing. Thanks for the invite, @Muse!

There was a group of cloggers at the fair that day too, and I was fascinated by the noise and fun they were having. They borrow a lot from square dancing as it turns out. A single male clogger is called a "buck," a single female clogger is a "wing," and a couple is "buck and wing." There's a lot of Irish, Native American, and Appalachian influences. It's a truly American folk dance, a melting pot of cultures. Contra is not as familiar to me, but if I wasn't so far away from everything, I might take a class!

Oh, and I forgot my standard #newhere greeting, so here:

Welcome to Diaspora!

Diaspora takes time to become what you want it to be. Unlike Fakebook, D* won’t suggest “people you may know” or “stuff you might like.” So you kinda have to build it yourself, following #hashtags about stuff you’re interested in, and following people who share those interests. The people you follow, you can “categorize” in Aspects, including making up your own aspect categories, so in that way it can become something like a “Facebook group,” and you can share stuff with just that one aspect group then only those people will see it. So that’s kinda cool.

I think the interface is simpler than Fakebook, and it has more features, like the formatting and stuff that Facebook doesn’t have. You can ignore spammers and idiots, and that gets their stuff out of your feed. They can still see anything you post publicly, but they can’t comment on it.

Have fun!

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. Thanks for the invite, @Gaffer!

Among other things, I’m interested in #activedirectory, #balloonanimals, #bears, #bodybuilding, #broadway, #chocolate, #contradancing, #dhcp, #dns, #editing, #fantasy, #food, #gingers, #leather, #livetheater, #microsoft, #musicals, #oziana, #sciencefiction, #sciencefictionandfantasy, #sex, #squaredance, #technology, #technology-consultant, #tortoises, and #writing.

I'm an openly gay man, married to another man, and living in Sunnyvale, California. I'm both a square dancer and square dance caller, edit a technical journal for square dance callers.

I enjoy reading SF&F, watching and listening to live theater (especially Broadway musicals), and nearly any type of live musical performance.

I'm also active in the SF Bay Area leather/kink community (where I've spent many years fundraising for charity with Alameda County Leather Corps).

While currently I have no pets (husbands don't count), I spent 40 years raising tortoises (desert tortoises, box turtles, and Hermann's/Greek tortoises).

Professionally, I'm a partner in a network technology/support firm, where I'm an IT architect and project manager, specializing in IT migrations and restructuring, Microsoft Active Directory diagnosis and remediation, DNS, and DHCP.

Greetings, fellow Earthlings!

I'm not #newhere (or on this planet, as I'm over 70!) but I wanted to refresh my interests and mention that I have been terribly lax in adding people who may share them. (I've been on Joindiaspora since beta.) The fedeverse/fediverse is vast, so it's natural to feel lost. I've just been lazy. The impetus seems to be more on finding people than them finding you. As there's no "You may also like" bullshit or algorithms deciding what you see, you'll only see what you can (mostly) control. It means you do need to follow tags and people and cull the list from time to time. I've been bad about that this year, mea culpa.

I've been interested in #technology for about 60 years, starting with the radio transmitters I built with transistors and other discrete parts.
I've playing #music, starting with rock in the 1960's and #blues and #jazz in the 1970's. After working in a two-person #wine related business with my wife for 20 years, I now devote my days to creating, #composing and #recording music.

If I followed you, it may be for one of those things. I'm interested in #science and facts, but not politics, gaming or sports. I like art and photos but find them to sometimes overwhelm the feed. I admit I tend to broadcast my own music. If no one listens to it, it's not worth going to the trouble and expense of producing it, although I would still be composing and playing it, even for myself and a few close friends.

#musicians and other performers know this is a terrible time for them as there's nowhere to play live. It isn't as if we could move to another country, either.

If you got this far, I hope to talk soon, and thanks to those who boost the visibility of music you like.

Finally, here a preview of the latest thing I posted, composed about one week ago:

I've spent a lot of time in Tokyo over the years. I took this picture somewhere along the Arakawa tram line in Tokyo back in March 2001. I like it for a lot of reasons: the materials that are visible, the washing hanging out, the telegraph pole and the blue sky. The advertising sign completed the shot for me because of the device I was snapping with on that day (a disposable Fujifilm camera that cost ¥990). To me, the picture just says 'life' and it reminds me of everything that is new in the world, not old or decaying. Set against the seeming permanence of the sky, the concrete and brick cladding is cracked and the steel is corroding. The scene reminds me of the impermanence of things and the notion that out of the old the new is continually being generated. #newhere #photography #tokyo #japan #arakawaline

Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #computers, #electronicmusic, #photography, and #synthesizers and a fair whack of other stuff I couldn't be bothered tagging ;) Never been on Fakebook, but have been wondering about this for a while... I've lived in the UK for a decade, but now back in Sunny Australia, sheltering from Covid-19 like everyone else. Curious to see if anyone I know is on here and make new friends here. If you want a flavour of what I'm about, check me out on Twitter or look and some old ramblings on WordPress - yeah, really should write something again...

Hello and a big welcome

to everyone new to diaspora\*

We're so pleased that you've decided to give diaspora\* a try. It's fantastic that you've joined us!

We hope that you quickly find your way here, and enjoy getting connected with people and content.

Here's a few tips for getting started:
  • There are some step-by-step tutorials on our project website covering the basics of how diaspora* works, and how to get connected with people. There's a link to these in the side-bar, should you ever want to read them in future, and there's also an in-app Help section you can access through your user menu (at the right-hand end of the header bar).
  • You can search for people by name or by diaspora* ID (which looks like an email address), if you know it, from the search field in the header bar. You can invite people to join you in diaspora* by sending them a link to our project website, from where they can choose their own pod to register with. Your friends don't need to be on the same pod as you in order to connect and communicate with you.
  • One good way to start getting connected with people is to start following some #tags of subjects that interest you (maybe #music, #photography, #linux, or #activism ... whatever interests you) so that you will see content on those topics in your stream. You can then start following people whose posts you find interesting, by placing them into one of your aspects.
  • If you have any questions, post something with the #question or #help tag, and people will try to help you. Make sure to make your post public so anyone who can help is able to see it!
diaspora\* has some very simple community guidelines, which we hope everyone will feel able to follow so that all members can have the best possible experience here.

We're trying to improve diaspora* all the time, fixing bugs, honing performance and adding new features. But how fast we can do this is limited by the time developers have. To improve diaspora* faster, we need more developers! If you've just signed up and can code, or know someone who can and who might be interested in joining our team, get in touch!

Hey everyone, I’m #newhere. I’m interested in #bike-guy, #bricolagerécup, #climate-chance, #cyclotourisme. French in the heart, leaving in New-Zealand, I've been thinking about joining Diaspora for a while but hadn't yet taken the effort to.
