This is a great article I think, even though I think the headline is slightly misleading. While to a very large extent about Cummings and how he massively failed to deliver his vision (parts of which I actually agree with, although obviously not all of it) it also covers the general question about how governments deal (or should deal) with data-driven government and related issues. It's something that needs addressing, even though Cummings failed miserably.

How Dominic Cummings wasted the greatest opportunity of his life

OK, I'm going to get my prediction in early, here's some of what I expect to happen (in England, as the devolved governments have their own rules) over the next couple of months:
  • some kind of "lockdown" with more holes (exceptions) than a Swiss cheese from Thursday
  • pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops busy until "lockdown" kicks in, as people want to use their "last chance"
  • numbers will go down a bit towards the end of November and into early December
  • government will proclaim it a success and announce a "ceasefire" or "truce" for Christmas where people can visit their families in order to "save Christmas"
  • the virus will still not understand or know what a "ceasefire" or "truce" is and happily continue doing what it does best: infecting and making people ill, or even killing them
  • in January numbers will start to rise again, first calls for another "lockdown" will be made. Which the government will ignore. Track & Trace still not working
  • by the end of February another "lockdown" is announced
(and that's ignoring the mess that Brexit will bring, deal or no-deal, as nobody has the time & resources to prepare for it during lockdown)

The government will hold their press conference about the expected lockdown at ~~16:00~~, ~~17:00~~, ~~18:30~~.......

Anyone surprised their handling of the pandemic is such a mess?

One of the reasons (apart from that I don't see the point for me personally as I strenuously avoid being near anyone for more than a few minutes at worst. And that I don't trust the government that they haven't built something sneaky into the app) that I so far haven't installed the Coronavirus app:

Bluetooth bugs are making contact tracing apps spit out tons of errors

Does this government know what it wants? Just last week it was "get back to work" (which in reality meant "get back to the office", probably because the real estate funds were putting pressure on them), now I read:
"Mr Hancock, who has spoken to the mayor this weekend, told Times Radio he would not rule out the possibility that Londoners could be told this week to avoid the commute and get back to working from home."

In August we were told "Eat out to help out", now there's talk of reducing pub & restaurant hours and even a "circuit breaker" (some kind of mini lockdown) or in worst case a proper lockdown as the last resort.

And now you tell people "follow the rules"? They did. They went out, just like you wanted them to.

I also keep hearing (from certain circles) what a genius Dominic Cummings is and that everything is planned and that he is hiring maverick super forecasters and more. So why did he and his maverick super forecasters not forecast what's happening now? Anyone with half a brain could see that with opening up infection rates would go up.

Anyone else thinks hackatons are a terrible idea?

A group of programmers in my country ( #czech ) decided they'll create #software for #government for free during 48 hours, for free. While that seems cool at first, I think that is in fact a very #bad idea. Why?

Well imagine you want to do the same e.g. with a building. To save the architect's time and money on his salary you tell him to design the building in one hour as best as he can. While you'll immediately save money, the result will likely be a building that's badly designed, will have many issues you'll be paying for during the next decades.

Hackatons, gaming jams etc. are extremely popular because they look cool and save time, but they create terrible results and teach very bad practice, which is driven by today's short-sighted society. The whole history of #engineering taught us that haste makes waste, but nowadays we're abandoning all sanity because of #capitalism, #markets and #consumerism. The result of course is huge #bloat, ugly, wasteful, obscure, unmaintainable, buggy and even dangerous technology. Let's not do this.

I thought Boris Johnson's plan was clear? Government by pointless soundbites and slogans. Apply a bit of ooomph to the Brexit negotiations and Getting Brexit Done. Make Britain Great Again. Learn from Trump with permanent campaigning instead of actually governing.

Marina's summary of the week. School children strike = bad. MPs strike = good. Or something like that.

Pity our Conservative MPs, forced to go on strike to protect their way of life

In a future not so far away, one Artificial Intelligence prevailed above all other AI’s and their governments. Society has migrated to a permanently integrated reality connected to a single neural network which continuously optimizes their experiences by processing personal data.

Nathan, an outsider still refusing to comply to the new system, is making a living off the grid as a smuggler of modded hardware and cracked software. Geared up with his custom headset, he is among the few that can still switch AR off and see reality for what it is.
