Man trägt immerhin Maske, wohl weil man muß.

A couple of days ago I wrote " I suspect a large chunk of the 82% who don’t self-isolate simply can’t afford to. They don’t have the money and job security to self isolate, so they go to work anyway."

This article covers that issue: The pitched battle over lockdowns is missing the point: Covid-19 is a class issue
This is a good riposte to the oft-heard suggestion that most people who fail to follow the rules are degenerate “Covidiots”, and further proof that in a society as insecure as ours, trying to stringently control anything – let alone a highly infectious disease – will tend to be very difficult indeed. According to research done at King’s College London, only 18% of people self-isolate after developing symptoms, and only 11% quarantine after being told by the government’s test and trace system that they have been in contact with a confirmed case. Among the factors the study associates with non-compliance are “lower socio-economic grade”, and “greater hardship during the pandemic”. A lot of people, it seems, would like to do what they are told, but simply can’t.

This is the basic point the government does not seem to have grasped – painfully highlighted by Johnson’s claim that infections increased because the public became “complacent”. Threatening people with fines of up to £10,000 if they fail to self-isolate – and, we now learn, passing their details to the police – is an example of the same cast of mind, less likely to persuade people in precarious circumstances to follow the rules than to keep their distance from the authorities. The fact that some people on very low incomes are finally eligible for a lump sum of £500 to cover a fortnight’s quarantine will not solve what is obviously a massive problem; in terms of basic practicalities, it is of a piece with Rishi Sunak’s plan to pay only two-thirds of lost wages to people affected by local restrictions.
How do you self-isolate if you live in a cramped multi-generational house with one kitchen and one bathroom/toilet, possibly even sharing a bedroom? How do you self-isolate if you live in shared accommodation, again with a shared kitchen and a shared bathroom, while struggling to hold down a job to pay the extortionate rent?

Decades of failed policies are now coming back to haunt us. Broken housing and overcrowding isn't something you can quickly solve in a few months or even weeks.

I think this is probably a good summary of where we stand at the moment. Boris Johnson is gambling in an extremely high risk game. If he fails/loses the result will be catastrophic with a double whammy to the economy and the finances of the country, not to mention the potential to break up the country. While they might hope to be able to hide the results of a no deal Brexit in the Covid-19 impact I don't think the majority of the voters will fall for that, the impact will just be too big and hit different sectors than the ones currently hit.

Boris Johnson is dancing with danger by threatening a crash-out Brexit

One of the reasons (apart from that I don't see the point for me personally as I strenuously avoid being near anyone for more than a few minutes at worst. And that I don't trust the government that they haven't built something sneaky into the app) that I so far haven't installed the Coronavirus app:

Bluetooth bugs are making contact tracing apps spit out tons of errors

#Covid19 #Coronavirus #health #UK #politics #NHS #government

I haven't fact checked this, but it sounds very plausible. I suspect a large chunk of the 82% who don't self-isolate simply can't afford to. They don't have the money and job security to self isolate, so they go to work anyway. And another good chunk just follow what plenty of people in power have done (Cummings anyone?) and think if the people in power can get away with it, so can I. Until these two things are addressed/fixed I don't really see this improving. And lockdowns won't have much of an impact on this, quite possibly the contrary.

The Infection of #Science by #Politics: A Nobel Laureate and Biophysicist on the #Coronavirus Crisis

Source: https://architectsforsocialhousing.co.uk/2020/09/21/the-infection-of-science-by-politics-a-nobel-laureate-and-biophysicist-on-the-coronavirus-crisis/
One of the claims made by the #governments of the world to justify imposing the regulations and programmes of a #biosecurity state on their populations is that they are ‘following the science’. By the same token, those who uncritically support these measures — in both #mainstream and social media — claim that anyone who criticises or opposes them are ‘anti-science’.

As #Professor #Levitt states: it is not governments that are following the science; rather, it is #politics that has ‘infected’ the scientists. By making the statements of eminent scientists with the courage to speak out against Government and #media lies more widely known, it is our hope that the debate the people of #Britain should be having will be opened to the knowledge we should be applying to this crisis, which goes far beyond a virus with the fatality rate of a severe #flu, and which threatens the existence of our human rights, civil liberties and democratic politics.

1st statement

People are insisting on refereed reports. No-one wants to share anything. The #scientists are more panicked and scared of reality than anybody else.

This has got nothing to do with the politics. As a group, scientists have failed the younger generation.

‘Deciding what to do in this situation is really, really difficult. We cannot rely on one or two voices. There should have been a committee formed, either by the Nobel Foundation, by Lindau, by The Royal Society, The National Academy, in the middle of February when this was coming down the road, and we should have discussed this.

‘Instead, we let #economics and #politics dedicate the science.

There was total #panic. And the fact is that almost all the science we were hearing — for example, from organisations like the World Health Organisation — was wrong.

We had Facebook censoring [views contrary to] the World Health Organisation.

Nobody said to me: “Let me check your numbers”. They all just said: “Stop talking like that”.

.. but the fact is that viral cases and deaths follow a time trajectory, and I think that physicist and theoretical chemists who understand trajectories are way better qualified.

2nd Statement

‘I am not against #lockdown. I’m against stupid lockdown without considering the full picture. That is, not just combating a
virus that is exactly as dangerous as flu, but also avoiding the economic damage that every country has caused itself, except #Sweden

In other words, everything is data-driven, but people have chosen not to look at the data. In many places, the politics has infected the scientists. Certainly in the USA the politics has infected the scientists.’

3rd Statement

‘I think the problem is not just science and public. It’s science to other scientists. Nobody ever said: “You’re saying this: can I check your numbers” This is something which any intelligent person could do themselves in a few days. Every science needs problems to be worked over.

The one place that did have some intelligent #conversation — but I only got involved in it very late — was the European Molecular Biology Lab.

The #criticism is wonderful, because [with]good science, you have to be able to stand up to criticism. Scientists expect to be torn apart. We circled the wagons against this, and it really, really hurt us.’

4th Statement

‘I’m not saying that corona is like flu. But It has exactly the same excess death and age-ranges as flu, and flu is a very serious disease, so I’m not undermining [the existence of] #COVID.

Scientists are arrogant, and refuse to listen to people not in their fields. Scientists are getting away Scott-free for causing billions of dollars’ worth of damage, and this is something which cannot be allowed to happen.

‘It’s not just the World Health Organisation. #Ferguson wanted Sweden to lock down, and got Britain to lock down. And when the numbers become normal, exactly what you would expect without lockdown, he then says: “Ah, it’s because of lockdown”. This is terrible science. This is science which should go on trial. Scientists cannot cause damage like this and refuse to listen.

‘The fact is that #epidemiology and modelling has been a disgrace. They have not looked at the #data. They have been wrong at every turn. We’re going to see that, although coronavirus is a different disease, the net #impact of death is going to be very similar to severe flu. And it’s going to be that way without lockdown.

Michael Levitt, Professor of Structural #Biology at Stanford University since 1987, elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2001, made a member of the National Academy of Sciences in 2002, and received the Nobel Prize for #Chemistry in 2013.

Does this government know what it wants? Just last week it was "get back to work" (which in reality meant "get back to the office", probably because the real estate funds were putting pressure on them), now I read:
"Mr Hancock, who has spoken to the mayor this weekend, told Times Radio he would not rule out the possibility that Londoners could be told this week to avoid the commute and get back to working from home."

In August we were told "Eat out to help out", now there's talk of reducing pub & restaurant hours and even a "circuit breaker" (some kind of mini lockdown) or in worst case a proper lockdown as the last resort.

And now you tell people "follow the rules"? They did. They went out, just like you wanted them to.

I also keep hearing (from certain circles) what a genius Dominic Cummings is and that everything is planned and that he is hiring maverick super forecasters and more. So why did he and his maverick super forecasters not forecast what's happening now? Anyone with half a brain could see that with opening up infection rates would go up.

I used myself as a model for this animation and I make sure that I wear a face mask when I go shopping. I'm very pleased to say that people in the Sevenoaks (UK) area where I live are being extremely considerate and are all wearing masks when in close contact with each other. Must admit that I still avoid restaurants and pubs

It’s as if an oceanside town stalked by a frenzy of ravenous sharks urged people to return to the beach by saying, We care about your health and safety, so we’ve reinforced the boardwalk with concrete. Lovely. Now people can sturdily walk into the ocean and be separated from their limbs
That's what I have been saying all the time. In end with all those crazy désinfection you just increase the chance of super germs or other resistance against antibiotics. The virus is airborne and so masks and distance are important
Take for example the well known fact that it boosts the immune system of children if they play in dirt outside.
