UK post-Brexit blue passports made in Polish factory | News | The Times

Oh the Irony

Only the US and the EU? Which country with a sane mind would enter a trade deal with the UK if they know there's a good chance the UK will later try to wiggle out of the deal, not fulfil its commitments or try to circumvent the agreement?

Two older articles, but still interesting today:

The blue passport is taking back control? No, it was first imposed on us from abroad - So the only thing that changes is the colour (which wasn't mandatory anyway) and most of the other measures are forced on the UK by (no surprise there) the US. Unless the Brexiteers want to give up visa free travel to the US and make travelling generally more difficult, which doesn't play nicely with "global Britain"

Now we're getting blue passports back, what else can Britain restore? - Seems there isn't exactly much. Except for pointless nonsense most of the younger generation won't understand and won't work with the proclaimed goal of "global Britain"

A painful and brutal truth. If the planned points based immigration system goes ahead the UK will sadly only find out in a decade or later, if ever, on how much talent it has missed out. And the UK's loss will be other countries gain.

The UK wants the 'best' immigrants. Why would they want the UK?
With its new points-based immigration system, Britain should realise it is not the only one able to pick and choose

What this article (like far too many articles about the impact of travelling or working abroad in Europe after Brexit) fails to mention: Almost certainly something very similar will apply for UK artists wanting to perform in the EU. They will need some kind of work visa or a work permit or something similar. They will have to complete a huge amount of paperwork for their instruments and any merchandise (t-shirts, CDs etc) they might want to take with them to sell at their concerts. As most of these artists are at the very start of their career and their tours are self organised this will make it extremely difficult for them. In effect this will mean that many young and promising artists will never get their chance. The UK music industry will be hit very hard by this, very hard.

EU touring artists will need visas to perform in the UK from 2021

Good luck to UK workers wanting to work in the EU (or other non English speaking countries) if the EU (or other non English speaking countries) reciprocate and require skills in the relevant local language. I'm pretty sure a vastly higher percentage of non-British workers learn English than English workers learning any other foreign language....

UK to close door to non-English speakers and unskilled workers

PS: just to be clear, I support expectations/requirements for immigrants to integrate, incl to learn the local language. But I wouldn't necessarily make it a requirement to be allowed in in the first place (if you need it for the job and don't speak it you won't be hired anyway). But once you're there and in particular if you intend to stay it should be a requirement. But that goes both ways: Brits retiring to Spain, Portugal or France should be required to learn the respective local language, integrate and don't live in British expat ghettos with British pubs, British newspapers and more.

Isn't it ironic how the people who so frequently complain about "political correctness" and "not being allowed to say what you think" suddenly get upset when someone says something about them they don't like?

Unless something changes all that talk about "sovereignty" and "letting our own parliament decide our laws" was just yet another empty promise, certainly in regards to trade deals with all their legal, economical and societal consequences. It will just be another power grab by a Tory government with impacts lasting for generations, possibly forever.

I've got mixed feelings about this. On one side it would be a nice move by the EU to maintain the goodwill and friendship with those in the UK open to the EU. On the other side I'm convinced there will be no movement at all on the UK side, the government is hellbent on making it more difficult for immigrants to come to the UK and won't change a thing about the messed up settled status system. It will also provide a nice boost to the Brexiteers, "see, we can have our cake and eat it", retain free movement of Brits to the EU while stopping all EU free movement to the UK.

Just you wait until Brexit has actually happened, we're only in the transition phase now. Just you wait until you have to make sure your (blue) passport is valid for at least six months. Just you wait until you need an international driving license just to drive a car in some EU countries. Just you wait until your travel insurance skyrockets because the EHIC won't be valid any more. Just you wait until you need to apply for a visa waiver before even traveling to the EU, like you already have to do before traveling to the US.

And yes, that's exactly what you voted for. Sovereignty goes both ways. If the UK "takes back control of its borders", so does the EU.

Should someone remind them that the UK could have had blue passports all along while in the EU? And that therefore blue passports are not in the slightest a sign of independence?

But isn't that what people voted for? And anyway, with everyone getting a fancy new blue passport (and happily paying for the privilege) it won't be an issue anyway?

Some very good and important points in this, especially in the last two paragraphs:
You could say that in elected dictatorships, the state purges the civil service and judiciary and controls the media and Britain has not reached that point. But instead of looking at the terminus, notice the direction of travel. Johnson has suspended parliament and purged his party of dissenting pro-European voices. Attacks on the independence of the judiciary and civil service are now standard for a right that cannot tolerate constraints.

Britain is not Hungary. But if you want to stop your country heading that way, is it not more effective to start fighting back at the first sign of danger rather than waiting until it is too late?
For the new right, Hungary is now what Venezuela once was for the left

Something most Brexiteers won't understand until the rude, very rude, awakening. The UK will have to very costly replicate all the previously shared agencies, which will have to be filled with bureaucrats and technocrats. Said bureaucrats and technocrats will want to cover their asses, as they will be in the firing line otherwise if anything goes wrong, so there will be a lot of regulation. The same applies to minister who while talking about "cutting red tape" in their Sunday speeches and press releases will also want to cover their asses, again meaning more regulation.

And then there's all the customs paperwork UK exporters to the EU will most likely have to complete. That will probably create several tens of thousands of jobs, so there are at least some good news. That's not even really mentioned in the article.

Why Brexit will lead to more red tape, not less

Ok, it's The Sun, so I'm not sure how reliable this is, but if true: wasn't Brexit largely about all the amazing trade deals and global Britain and all that waffle? Shouldn't that require a good bit of involvement from the PM?

Didn't they promise that once we had left the EU there would be £350M/week for the NHS? Didn't they promise there would be dozens of amazing trade deals signed the minute after Brexit happened? Didn't they promise the UK wouldn't have to pay a single penny of the "divorce bill"? I guess a lot of Brexiteers must be feeling rather sheepish now.....

How pathetic and idiotic can the Brexiteers get? (I'm sure he knows there's a transition period, but that's obviously not the point of his tweet. He just wants to whip up the Brexit supporters (many of which will fall for this kind of nonsense) and try to rile the Remainers)

An important point, which could still lead to enormous pressure on the government once Brexit all goes wrong and the promised sunlit uplands don't appear but jobs disappear as production is shifted from the UK to the continent (with the increased bureaucracy JIT etc simply won't be feasible any longer):
Despite the Conservatives' election success, polls conducted during the campaign suggested - as they had done for the last two years - that there was a small but consistent majority in favour of remaining in the EU.

Now that the UK has left the EU the Brexiteers referendum mandate to take the UK out of the EU is gone, their strongest argument is gone. Now they need to show they can fulfil their promises of a better future. Meaning they're on the defence. They won it, they own it. They need to deliver. It's their fault if it goes wrong. And it's up to the Rejoiners to make the positive case to (re-)join the EU, the advantages it will bring when Brexit doesn't deliver what it was promised to deliver.

The end of the dream. The start of the resistance.
