Dieter Rams designed products to last a lifetime — and he's horrified by how we throw things away

For more than 50 years, Rams made an indelible mark on product design, predominantly at the German electronics company Braun, with a focus on function over form and products that would last a lifetime. The effects of his influence are extraordinary — a legacy that transformed the nature of consumer products and, some would argue, defined the concept of good design.

For The New G-Plus Refugees Coming To Pluspora Let’s Do The Aspects Again :

Folks who are not on Pluspora, feel free to skip this post, this is really just intended for the refugees on our Pod and not meant to klutter up your reading. Folks who are already being shared with by me are in my Aspects don't need to read this again for the most part (if you haven't seen it but I am sharing with you then please do skim along).

This is probably going to be the last public post of the Aspects. I will do an abbreviated one in the future only for folks in my Aspects already but I will be reducing my public posting due to hate mongers on other pods that I have zero interest in.

Things are fading out over on G-Plus. I've been checking back daily and watching as folks pack up, say farewells and lock up the hold place. I've also been here on Pluspora for months now. If you know me or have heard about this place from me then welcome aboard. There are lots of fellow refugees and good people here.

If you have seen and/or interacted with any of my posts, article links etc here on pluspora then you might want to know that just as on G+ I actually post a LOT more than what you see in my public posts. If we are not sharing with each other and you are not in my aspects, you only see 10% of what I post, discuss and get involved in.

I put a lot of what I write behind Aspects, which for me act as private posts. These let me avoid flooding the stream and let folks see posts on specific subjects that they are interested in.

Warning, I am verbose, opinionated and eclectic in my interests.

It also means that I can keep things mostly troll, spam and neo-nazi free. AND that if you see replies/comments from someone in my aspected posts you know that they are also interested in that subject and might be a neat person for you to share with as well on that subject. And probably a generally decent person to know.

Building up private aspect sharing this way allows an emulation of some of the controls that many of us were used to on g+ and other platforms. There is a problem from specific problem pods (what some folks here call the #RudePods or #NaziPods or #TrollPods) on the Diaspora Network. Mostly these are pods filled with MAGA types who have been tossed out of the civilized pods (though some keep multiple sock puppet accounts like they do on Youtube, Twitter etc). Their numbers are few and small and they hate Pluspora for its founder's insistence of maintaining civilized and polite discussion and not allowing members who use anonymous posting to commit what is considered in some states of the USA as hate crimes or libel. Oh and they hate the fact that we are 11,800+ Strong and outnumber them considerably. Unlike Twitter or Facebook they are a minority here.

So, here’s my List of aspects. If you are sharing with me, and not a troll, Anti-LGBT, or rampant neo-nazi/alt-right/fascist kind of person you might want to considering connecting up this way (reply if you are interested in specific aspects). My aspects lists are also a way to find others on pluspora or the diaspora who are not fundamentally rude, crude, blatantly evil or purposely cruel. I don't get along with those types and won't share with them when they are encountered. I am also actively trying to connect up folks with matching interests to develop their own aspect collections with private sharing to shut out those sort sort folks.

One small thing… if all you post is in a non-english language in your own posts then please don’t share with me. I am monolingual for the most part and find that generally translations don’t work here on diaspora. I wish neither of these things were true, but I'm too old to learn more languages.

So, reply and let me know where your interests are :

#Artists (visual, audio, and sometimes performance; includes photography)
#Biography (that is biographic pieces on other people, not mine)
#Cambridge (That would be Cambridge Massachusetts USA)
#CurrentEvents (includes politics, world events, news)
#FictionBooks (I read things that are not in SF/Fantasy)
#FilmAndTv (may include spoilers, criticism, reviews, theory etc.) #Film #TV
#Food (cooking, eating out experiences, recipes, etc.) #Recipies #Cooking
#Gamers (tabletop, rpgs, role-playing, computer, online, design projects, tools & techniques)
#History (includes archaeology etc)
#Humor (comedians, funny life things, memes)
#Life (My personal life; I’m very careful as to who can read these as I do one daily)
#Pagan (neo-pagan etc. Things not in mainstream religion, including mythology)
#Science (includes space, medicine, environment, physics etc.)
#SFAndFantasy (books and other fantastic literature media)
#Technology (includes computers, the internet, AI, robots, etc.)
#Webcomics (not just the funny ones)
#Writers (Includes How to, format, plotting, characterization, world building, criticism/reviews, spoilers, tools)
#Zibaldone (language, culture, mathematics, strange things, philosophy)

There are days where I will only read/post based on my aspects, to avoid the stream firehose, so being in my aspects is more likely to get my involvement in things that you post…

When posting and using hashtags, always Capitalize the first letter, this is so folks with visual impairment who use screen readers can use search aspects effectively on them

Resharing links of articles from elsewhere on the web that I have posted about is fine, if you want to do so in your circles or even in public. Do not do this with my own commentary or discussions of them or anything I have marked with the hashtag #myownwork please, marked that way consider them to be under copyright protection at this time as works in progress.

#NVIDIA acquires #Mellanox: yesterday‘s rumour became reality today.

Why did they do that? #Datacenter operators accelerate computing power with NVIDIA #GPU‘s for increasing #AI or #DL/#ML workloads. Mellanox empowers networks to reach ever new speeds and nearly eliminated latency. Last is most important for cloud computing setups and the increasing number of service providers such as Zalando, booking or Amazon.

The racy thing about the current acquisition is NVIDIA‘s engagement in future #technology like autonomous driving and industrial networks generally. Processing huge amounts of data in a maximum distributed environment is a big challenge – and in the case of selfdriving cars it becomes life critical literally. I understand, that a company like NVIDIA wants to get as much control as possible over as much components as possible. Or why would have been Intel so keen on the same subject?

With picking the sweetest cherry from the tree NVIDIA gets an enormous head start in the race.

Payment of the future

Prolog: This is my first try of using the Diaspora as a blog. But I really need to share my experiences with mobile payment and modern banks with you. Like it. Or don't like it.

It is all is still an experiment. After reading it some will say, it's a privacy and data protection and anything nightmare. To be honest, finally I don't care much about it. My clear goal was to improve the way I pay in shops. Mission accomplished.

If you're a customer of N26 bank already, you'll know the story. Nevertheless I will tell you, the world and alien visitors what I went through.

All comes from chaos

Do you know the situation paying your purchases at the local groceries store? I feel usual payment methods somewhat annoying. Money: does still many people use it actually? Cards: picking a tiny card out of narrowly manufactured purses, doing something with the card and the terminal, than suddenly being asked for a pin, don't know how or where to store the card so quickly, putting purse and card and car keys somewhere at the cash desk, enter the pin, looking for your stuff and hope you'll find everything and try to bring the formerly loveless thrown away things to an useful order again.

There must be easier ways to pay in situations like this. Not actually a surprise, there are easier ways. One I've seen in Bohemia when the guy before me used a Mastercard key ring pendant. Of course, my bank does not provide such nice gimmicks. So I looked for an alternative.

How do you want to pay? With my watch, please.

Right. Watches seemed to bring salvation. But what watch would be the best? Of course first of all it needs to support NFC. Many of modern smart watches do this. I wanted an AMOLED display. Search results reduced to two. One of them requires a proprietary payment method. Dear! In times of Paypal, Google Pay and what ever who would need a third party proprietary solution? I do not. Unfortunately the only remaining smart watch is from a brand I do not love actually. But I wanted this AMOLED display. After three more hours of research I bought it.

At this point it might be helpful to know, that I really love my LG smart watch. First generation. No NFC. I will miss it painfully.

Good Bank, bad bank?

After all I will arrange with my unloved new smart watch. It has a round display, looks not as geeky as the LG, and did I mentioned I don't like the brand? Anyways, it does what it's supposed to. Easily? No, not soooo easily.

To pay with the watch I need a payment service. Google pay in that case. As an existing user of this service I couldn't imagine any difficulties about it.

"We are sorry. Your bank is not supported". WTH?! It's a bloody credit card! You already accepted it for online transactions. And at all why don't you just use my virtual Paypal card? After spending another hour in different forums and scrolled through endless help pages I came to the conclusion, that if I want to use Google pay with my smart watch I need another credit card.

The agony of choice

Supported banks by Google are Sparkasse (Pestilence), Commerzbank (Cholera) and something I never ever heard of: N26. Again I dived into the deeps of the world wide web to know something about N26. Why not giving it a try? Setting up the account was actually easy. Too easy? Before I realised what I did I ordered a new credit card. What happened next impressed me like nothing before! Remember when you set up an account at one of those traditional financial institutes? Tons of papers and signs and proofs and checks and what else. Not with N26! After filling some fields online a message appeared "Incoming video call. Please accept with your smartphone." ... Err ... O-kay?! After a few seconds one of the N26 service agents vc'ed me, asked me some questions, took a photo of me, scanned my ID card very extensively, asked more questions and after three or four minutes she hang up with the note, my new credit card is on ist way. During the whole phone call she remotely controlled the camera of my smart phone - I did not had to do anything just following her instructions where to look or when to turn the phone around. That was quite scary. But hey! It`s the 21st century?

The end of the story: I've got my new credit card only three days later. Chose my PIN. Let Google scan it. And I payed with my new smart watch today at EDEKA and Rossmann. It worked faultlessly easily without all the chaos of managing cards and purses and car keys and things.

In the end
I will start to love my new smart watch, my new bank and the era of cashless smart payment methods.

More creepy reasons why Europe should stop their Zwergenaufstand against Facebook & Co immediately.

I personally do not care about the tech behemoths. I am much more worried about data collecting freezers and their creator‘s un-understanding of privacy. I feel much saver with Google or Microsoft than with all these traditional companies who are much better at building cars or fridges. I do not even trust German providers like web.de etc. because I do not beliefe that they truely knows what they do.

Every company (serious or not) nowadays tries to get their crumbs from the big table - more or less successful. And while concentrating on some big players (who btw are much to clever than being actual impressed by these Stürmen im Wasserglas) any other player on earth tramples on privacy and the security of our data unmolested.

Note that Videos on Youtube that I link to in my posts can be accessed long after the posts by going to the appropriate Aspect Play List on my channel:

At its core, GPT2 is a text generator. The AI system is fed text, anything from a few words to a whole page, and asked to write the next few sentences based on its predictions of what should come next. The system is pushing the boundaries of what was thought possible, both in terms of the quality of the output, and the wide variety of potential uses.

When used to simply generate new text, GPT2 is capable of writing plausible passages that match what it is given in both style and subject. It rarely shows any of the quirks that mark out previous AI systems, such as forgetting what it is writing about midway through a paragraph, or mangling the syntax of long sentences.

Feed it the first few paragraphs of a Guardian story about Brexit, and its output is plausible newspaper prose, replete with “quotes” from Jeremy Corbyn, mentions of the Irish border, and answers from the prime minister’s spokesman.

One such, completely artificial, paragraph reads: “Asked to clarify the reports, a spokesman for May said: ‘The PM has made it absolutely clear her intention is to leave the EU as quickly as is possible and that will be under her negotiating mandate as confirmed in the Queen’s speech last week.’”
