U.S. agency tells Biden he can formally begin transition

The U.S. federal agency that must sign off on the presidential transition told President-elect Joe Biden on Monday that he can formally begin the hand-over process.

“I take this role seriously and, because of recent developments involving legal challenges and certifications of election results, am transmitting this letter today to make those resources and services available to you,” General Services Administration chief Emily Murphy wrote in a letter to Biden.

U.S. President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter that he was recommending that Murphy and her team “do what needs to be done with regard to initial protocols, and have told my team to do the same.” ...
The present incumbent has still not conceded loss so far as I'm aware.

This is a great article I think, even though I think the headline is slightly misleading. While to a very large extent about Cummings and how he massively failed to deliver his vision (parts of which I actually agree with, although obviously not all of it) it also covers the general question about how governments deal (or should deal) with data-driven government and related issues. It's something that needs addressing, even though Cummings failed miserably.

No, it's not the leak about a potential lockdown causing a spike in cases. It's not the announcement of a lockdown causing a spike in cases. It's not an upcoming lockdown causing a spike in cases. It's unthinking, egoistic, careless people causing a spike in cases. It's people saying, "oh, there's a lockdown coming, let's go out and party while we can to give the virus the best possible opportunity to spread rapidly before we go into lockdown!" This spike was completely and utterly predictable, you just had to look at the news on the day the lockdown began: page after page after page of pictures of "people enjoying a last night of freedom before the lockdown"

John Major: Brexit set to be 'more brutal than anyone expected' | BBC News

The bill has been rejected by the UK's House of Lords.
This action is unprecedented in all our history - and for good reason. It has damaged our reputation around the world

"Because of our bombast, our blustering, our threats and our inflexibility - our trade will be less profitable, our Treasury poorer, our jobs fewer, and our future less prosperous."

Sir John also warned that Brexit divisions increased the risk of the United Kingdom breaking up.

OK, I'm going to get my prediction in early, here's some of what I expect to happen (in England, as the devolved governments have their own rules) over the next couple of months:
  • some kind of "lockdown" with more holes (exceptions) than a Swiss cheese from Thursday
  • pubs, restaurants and non-essential shops busy until "lockdown" kicks in, as people want to use their "last chance"
  • numbers will go down a bit towards the end of November and into early December
  • government will proclaim it a success and announce a "ceasefire" or "truce" for Christmas where people can visit their families in order to "save Christmas"
  • the virus will still not understand or know what a "ceasefire" or "truce" is and happily continue doing what it does best: infecting and making people ill, or even killing them
  • in January numbers will start to rise again, first calls for another "lockdown" will be made. Which the government will ignore. Track & Trace still not working
  • by the end of February another "lockdown" is announced
(and that's ignoring the mess that Brexit will bring, deal or no-deal, as nobody has the time & resources to prepare for it during lockdown)

So far for that "herd immunity" strategy......
They say immunity appears to be fading and there is a risk of catching the virus multiple times.
[..]
There are four other human coronaviruses, which we catch multiple times in our lives. They cause common cold symptoms and we can be reinfected every six to 12 months.

And there goes the Tories pensioner vote........

Also, with all the new customs officers we'll need after Brexit (didn't Gove just say, look how great Brexit is, all these new jobs?), how do they propose to achieve this?

Well, good luck with that, especially considering how Brexit is a massive power grab by Westminster (including what is perceived as taking some powers away from the devolved governments) and how they keep banging on about sovereignty and taking back control and negotiating as equals. When the UK wants sovereignty and take back control from the EU that's good, but when Scotland wants the same from the UK that's bad? You've shot yourselves in the foot there......

Also, I don't see why/how the EU should reject membership to an independent Scotland, provided it fulfils all the criteria (which could get interesting, as at the moment the SNP wants to keep the £, which probably won't fly with the EU. But then again, that can change).
Continuing to dismiss Scottish calls for another independence vote outright could be “counterproductive,” the memo said. Possible counter-measures include London handing more power to Edinburgh and ratifying a new settlement through a popular vote, and pressuring the European Union to nix the idea of Scotland rejoining the bloc as an independent country.

The big difference of course that the poll tax was a bit easier to back out of than Brexit will be. The damage Brexit already has done and will continue to do will to an extent be irreversible, some will take many years to fix and only some are truly reversible.

A couple of days ago I wrote " I suspect a large chunk of the 82% who don’t self-isolate simply can’t afford to. They don’t have the money and job security to self isolate, so they go to work anyway."

This article covers that issue: The pitched battle over lockdowns is missing the point: Covid-19 is a class issue
This is a good riposte to the oft-heard suggestion that most people who fail to follow the rules are degenerate “Covidiots”, and further proof that in a society as insecure as ours, trying to stringently control anything – let alone a highly infectious disease – will tend to be very difficult indeed. According to research done at King’s College London, only 18% of people self-isolate after developing symptoms, and only 11% quarantine after being told by the government’s test and trace system that they have been in contact with a confirmed case. Among the factors the study associates with non-compliance are “lower socio-economic grade”, and “greater hardship during the pandemic”. A lot of people, it seems, would like to do what they are told, but simply can’t.

This is the basic point the government does not seem to have grasped – painfully highlighted by Johnson’s claim that infections increased because the public became “complacent”. Threatening people with fines of up to £10,000 if they fail to self-isolate – and, we now learn, passing their details to the police – is an example of the same cast of mind, less likely to persuade people in precarious circumstances to follow the rules than to keep their distance from the authorities. The fact that some people on very low incomes are finally eligible for a lump sum of £500 to cover a fortnight’s quarantine will not solve what is obviously a massive problem; in terms of basic practicalities, it is of a piece with Rishi Sunak’s plan to pay only two-thirds of lost wages to people affected by local restrictions.
How do you self-isolate if you live in a cramped multi-generational house with one kitchen and one bathroom/toilet, possibly even sharing a bedroom? How do you self-isolate if you live in shared accommodation, again with a shared kitchen and a shared bathroom, while struggling to hold down a job to pay the extortionate rent?

Decades of failed policies are now coming back to haunt us. Broken housing and overcrowding isn't something you can quickly solve in a few months or even weeks.

I think this is probably a good summary of where we stand at the moment. Boris Johnson is gambling in an extremely high risk game. If he fails/loses the result will be catastrophic with a double whammy to the economy and the finances of the country, not to mention the potential to break up the country. While they might hope to be able to hide the results of a no deal Brexit in the Covid-19 impact I don't think the majority of the voters will fall for that, the impact will just be too big and hit different sectors than the ones currently hit.

Boris Johnson is dancing with danger by threatening a crash-out Brexit

One of the reasons (apart from that I don't see the point for me personally as I strenuously avoid being near anyone for more than a few minutes at worst. And that I don't trust the government that they haven't built something sneaky into the app) that I so far haven't installed the Coronavirus app:

Bluetooth bugs are making contact tracing apps spit out tons of errors

#Covid19 #Coronavirus #health #UK #politics #NHS #government

I haven't fact checked this, but it sounds very plausible. I suspect a large chunk of the 82% who don't self-isolate simply can't afford to. They don't have the money and job security to self isolate, so they go to work anyway. And another good chunk just follow what plenty of people in power have done (Cummings anyone?) and think if the people in power can get away with it, so can I. Until these two things are addressed/fixed I don't really see this improving. And lockdowns won't have much of an impact on this, quite possibly the contrary.
