Somehow I've got a hunch there will be "Corona Parties" in plenty pubs, restaurants etc up and down the country tonight. A last big piss up before the pubs close and they have to stay home.

And in a week or two we will see an explosion of Coronavirus cases.

Tim Martin will have some explaining to do.

So Boris Johnson gets the election he so desperately wanted. And by doing that he actually throws the Remainers a lifeline. Many think the Tories will easily win this election. While it is possible that he wins it I think there's still a good chance that he'll rue the decision to go after an election instead of sitting it out and somehow pushing through his WA. He was quite close. Now if the Remainers get their act together and Boris Johnson messes up a few times (plenty of opportunities for him to do that) there could very well be another hung parliament (among other reasons because there's a good chance the old two party system is dead). There could even be "grand coalition" of Labour, LibDems and SNP as almost certainly nobody will enter a coalition with the Tories if they don't get a majority.

This could get very interesting. And very very nasty.

Did David Cameron destroy the Tory party in his misguided attempt to rescue it?

It is a widely shared assumption that David Cameron promised and then delivered the EU referendum in an attempt to unite the Tory party. The idea seems to have been to "answer the question once and for all" and then to unite the party behind it. Which has failed spectacularly.

Now Boris Johnson seems to believe the only way to save the Tories and make them electable is to turn them in effect into the Brexit Party / UKIP / whatever vehicle Farage comes up with next. But to do that he has to overtake them on the right. Not to mention that he has expelled 21 members of the more moderate wing of his party.

This will turn off many more moderate voters, not to mention the remain leaning (former?) Tory voters, many won't want the no deal Johnson (or is it actually Cummings?) seems to want. Meaning in order to attract some (he will never get them all) right wing voters he will lose a lot of moderate voters, many probably to the LibDems.

Is this how the Tories as a mainstream party will end?

Ok.
Well.
It is a divorce, but it is as good as any reason for having a party on the beach, is it not? This means we have accepted the inevitable: We are moving on, see you again in better days.

A view on Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson's medium term self destruction of the Tories. It might not happen immediately (if he's lucky), but won't take too long:

So who will be the next Tory to ruin their career and life trying to deliver Brexit and uniting the deeply split Tory party?

Fascinating (and I think very plausible) read about what might have happened if the result of the EU referendum had been the other way around. In a way we would be in a fairly similar situation now, a deeply divided country with a destroyed political culture. Showing that the real culprit for the mess we're in isn't Theresa May (although she contributed heavily) but David Cameron, who instigated the referendum in the first place for party political reasons, to unite his divided country. And failed abysmally. Quite possibly destroying his party (I think there's a good chance the Tories will split up) and breaking up the UK (I think if they get their referendum there's a good chance Scotland will leave the UK. Northern Ireland being reunited with the Republic of Ireland I think is also possible).

One to watch if anything useful develops out of this? Both Tories and Labour I feel are finished. But as of yet there's nothing to replace them. May be one day soon there will be?
