Bypassing clinical trials of COVID-19 vaccine 'catastrophic,' says editorial

http://global.chinadaily.com.cn/a/202005/23/WS5ec88c5ca310a8b241157ca4.html

Bypassing clinical trials of a potential vaccine for #SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing #COVID-19, would be "catastrophic," said an editorial published on #Science Advances on Friday.

It is "vital to take time" to ensure any vaccine candidate's safety and investigate potential adverse effects, said the editorial by Douglas Green, deputy editor of the multidisciplinary scientific journal.

A vaccine able to trigger strong neutralizing antibody responses in #clinical tests will still not be ready for widespread implementation without comprehensive safety tests, wrote Green, who is also an expert on #immunology.

Vaccines must be examined for causing an effect known as antibody-dependent enhancement, whereby #vaccine-induced #antibodies that bind to the #virus also attach to the body's #cells, facilitating #infection of these cells -- a concerning phenomenon that has been observed in vaccines against #dengue, #Ebola, #HIV, and #feline #coronavirus, said the editorial.

Ethical accelerated testing on humans "should not be ruled out completely," but extreme risks must be weighed against potential benefits, it said.

There are currently 95 vaccines under development against SARS-CoV-2, with most expected to clear phase one, and two already moving into phase two trials, it added.

Coronavirus doctor's diary: The strange case of the choir that coughed in January | BBC Health

He's also an epidemiologist, which is:
a medical detective, and like all detectives, the three key clues we are looking for are always: person, place and time.

So when I got an email out of the blue from a Bradford resident saying that she and her friends may have been infected with Covid-19 in January - nearly two months before the first confirmed case of transmission in the UK - I looked for these clues and decided to investigate further.

A choir decided to go ahead with rehearsal. Now dozens of members have COVID-19 and two are dead | LA Times

the choir outbreak is consistent with a growing body of evidence that the virus can be transmitted through aerosols — particles smaller than 5 micrometers that can float in the air for minutes or longer.

...a study published March 17 in the New England Journal of Medicine found that when the virus was suspended in a mist under laboratory conditions it remained “viable and infectious” for three hours — though researchers have said that time period would probably be no more than a half-hour in real-world conditions.

...it’s possible that the forceful breathing action of singing dispersed viral particles in the church room that were widely inhaled.

...some people happen to be especially good at exhaling fine material, producing 1,000 times more than others.

Amateur singers interested in choral music tend to be older, but the group includes some young adults.

...The youngest of those sickened was 31, but they averaged 67

Die Systemrelevanz lockert sich …

Fußballer werden getestet. Weil systemrelevant?

Coronavirus: Scientists hail 'groundbreaking' discovery of antibody which prevents infection | Science & Tech News | Sky News

Scientists have discovered an antibody which prevents the coronavirus from infecting human cells in "groundbreaking research" which could lead to the development of new treatments.

Building on research into the SARS coronavirus, scientists from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, as well as the Erasmus Medical Centre and the company Harbour BioMed (HBM), have identified a potential method of neutralising COVID-19.

They discovered that an antibody which prevents the SARS virus from infecting human cells could also block the novel coronavirus from infecting human cells too, according a peer reviewed study published on Monday in the journal Nature Communications.
